Bangladesh Matkaopas

Olennaiset matkatiedot — hätänumerot, turvallisuus, valuutta, viisumit, tavat ja liikkuminen.

TurvallisuusVarovaisuutta noudatettava

Bangladesh is generally welcoming to travelers, and most visits to Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, the tea hills and the Sundarbans pass without serious incident. However, travelers should exercise increased caution. Petty crime, occasional political unrest (hartals/strikes and demonstrations that can turn violent), road-traffic dangers and seasonal flooding are real concerns. Most Western governments advise against all travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts (Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachhari districts) without prior government permission due to insurgency, kidnapping and intercommunal tension. Petty theft, congested and chaotic traffic, and air pollution in Dhaka are everyday realities rather than exceptional risks.

Käytännön tietoa
Valuutta

Bangladeshi taka (BDT)

Pistoke

Plug types C, D, G and K are used; mains voltage is 220V at 50Hz. Type D and G (three-pin) are most common, so a UK-style adapter is useful.

Juomaraha

Tipping (called 'baksheesh') is customary but modest. Many restaurants add a service charge; otherwise rounding up or leaving about 5-10% is appreciated. Small tips for porters, drivers and hotel staff are common and welcome. Bargaining is expected in markets and for rickshaws and taxis.

SIM / Data

Local prepaid SIMs from operators like Grameenphone, Robi and Banglalink are cheap and offer good 4G coverage in cities; passport and sometimes a photo and biometric (fingerprint) registration are required to buy one. Buy from official operator stores rather than street vendors. Coverage thins out in the Sundarbans, hill tracts and remote rural areas.

Viisumi

Most foreign nationals require a visa. Many nationalities (including US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia and others) can obtain a Visa on Arrival at major airports such as Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International for tourism or business, typically for stays up to 30 days, subject to conditions (return ticket, proof of funds, hotel booking). E-visa and embassy-issued visas are also available and rules change, so confirm current requirements with a Bangladeshi mission before travel. A passport valid for at least six months is required.

Liikkuminen
Julkinen liikenne

Within cities, transport is a mix of cycle rickshaws, CNG-powered auto-rickshaws (green three-wheelers), local buses and, in Dhaka, a modern Metro Rail (MRT Line 6) that bypasses the city's notorious traffic. Buses are very crowded and not always foreigner-friendly. Negotiate or confirm a metered fare for rickshaws and CNGs before riding.

Kyytipalvelut

Uber, Pathao, Obhai

Kaukoliikenne

Trains run by Bangladesh Railway connect Dhaka with Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna; book higher classes (AC chair or sleeper) in advance for comfort. Long-distance 'AC' coaches operated by companies like Green Line and Shohagh are popular and relatively comfortable. Domestic flights (Biman Bangladesh, US-Bangla, Novoair) link Dhaka with Chittagong, Sylhet, Cox's Bazar and other cities. River travel by ferry and the famous overnight 'Rocket' paddle steamers is iconic but check safety and weather, as overcrowded boats can be dangerous.

Kulttuuri
Tavat
  • • Dress modestly. Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country; both men and women should keep shoulders and knees covered, and women may feel more comfortable carrying a scarf (orna) for mosques and conservative areas.
  • • Greet with 'Assalamu alaikum' to Muslims; a slight nod or hand over the heart is appreciated. Handshakes are common between men, but wait for a woman to extend her hand first.
  • • Eat and pass items with the right hand. The left hand is considered unclean. Many meals are eaten by hand, and washing hands before and after is customary.
  • • Remove your shoes before entering mosques, temples and most private homes. Dress respectfully and cover your head (women) when entering mosques.
  • • Hospitality is central: guests are often pressed to eat more and refusing food outright can cause offense. Accept tea or a small portion graciously.
  • • Public displays of affection between couples are frowned upon. Modesty and reserve in public are valued, especially between men and women.
Pukukoodi

Conservative and modest. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothes that cover shoulders and knees suit the hot, humid climate and local norms. Women commonly wear the shalwar kameez with a scarf; long trousers and shirts are best for men. Cover up fully when visiting mosques or rural areas.

Uskonnollinen käytäytyminen

Islam is the state religion and roughly 90% of people are Muslim, with significant Hindu, Buddhist and Christian minorities. Dress modestly and behave respectfully near mosques and shrines; non-Muslims may not be permitted inside the prayer hall of some mosques. Remove shoes and, for women, cover the head before entering religious sites. During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours out of respect. Always ask before photographing people at prayer.

Football (soccer) is also widely followed, with strong support for European clubs. Kabaddi is the official national sport, played in rural areas, and traditional boat racing (nouka baich) during the monsoon is a colorful regional spectacle.
