Chad is a high-risk destination. Most Western governments advise against all or all-but-essential travel to large parts of the country due to terrorism, armed banditry, intercommunal violence, kidnapping, and the risk of unrest. The Lake Chad Basin (west), the Tibesti and northern border zones, and the eastern regions bordering Sudan are especially dangerous, with active militant groups, landmines, and a major refugee/humanitarian crisis. N'Djamena is comparatively more stable but still carries real risks of crime, political instability, and sudden protests. Petty and violent crime, poor medical facilities, and intense desert heat add to the challenges. Travelers should monitor official advisories, register with their embassy, use professional security advice, and avoid all border and conflict zones.

Валюта

Central African CFA franc (XAF)

Розетка

Types C, D, E and F; 220V, 50Hz

Чайові

Tipping is not deeply ingrained but is appreciated. In better restaurants rounding up or leaving about 5–10% is welcome; small tips for porters, guides, and drivers are customary. Carry small denominations of CFA francs in cash.

SIM / Дані

Local SIM cards from Airtel or Moov Africa (Tchad) are inexpensive and sold in N'Djamena; you'll need your passport to register. Coverage and mobile data are decent in N'Djamena and larger towns but sparse, slow, or absent in rural and remote regions. Buy and set up a SIM in the capital before heading out.

Віза

Most visitors need a visa to enter Chad, obtained in advance from a Chadian embassy or, for many nationalities, as an e-visa via the official government portal; a passport valid for at least six months and proof of a yellow fever vaccination are required. On arrival, foreigners are generally expected to register with the immigration/police authorities (often within 72 hours) — hotels can usually arrange this. Check current rules with a Chadian embassy before travel.

Як дістатися
Громадський транспорт

There is no metro or formal urban rail. Within N'Djamena, transport is by shared minibuses, green-and-yellow taxis (often shared along set routes), and motorcycle taxis (clandos/motos). Negotiate and agree fares before getting in, as meters are not used.

Таксі

No reliable international ride-hailing apps (Uber/Bolt) operate in Chad; arrange taxis through your hotel or use street taxis and motos with pre-agreed fares

Міжміський

Intercity travel is by shared bush taxi, minibus, or 4x4, often crowded and slow on poor or unpaved roads. Some paved routes radiate from N'Djamena (e.g. toward Moundou and the south), but many roads become impassable in the rainy season (roughly June to September). Distances are long and journeys can take all day; travel in daylight only. Internal flights are limited and unreliable. Always carry water, your passport, and copies of permits for checkpoints.

Культура
Звичаї
  • • Greetings are extended and important; take time to shake hands and ask after a person's health, family, and work before discussing business. Rushing a greeting is considered rude.
  • • Use the right hand for eating, giving, and receiving. The left hand is considered unclean and should not be used to pass food or objects.
  • • Meals are often communal, eaten from a shared bowl with the right hand. Wait to be invited to eat, and leave a little food to show you have had enough.
  • • Chad is a largely Muslim country in the north and east and Christian/animist in the south; dress and behavior should be modest and conservative, especially around mosques and in rural areas.
  • • Always ask permission before photographing people, military or government buildings, the presidential palace, bridges, airports, and checkpoints. Photographing officials or infrastructure can lead to arrest.
  • • Hospitality is highly valued; if offered tea or food, accepting at least a small amount is a sign of respect. Tea is often served strong, sweet, and in several rounds.
Дрес-код

Modest, conservative dress is expected. In the Muslim north and east, women should cover shoulders, chest, and knees, and a headscarf is useful for visiting mosques; men should avoid shorts in towns. Lightweight, loose, breathable clothing suits the intense heat, with long sleeves for sun and dust protection.

Релігійний етикет

Chad is roughly half Muslim (mainly north and east) and a large Christian and traditional-animist minority (mainly south). Remove your shoes and dress modestly before entering a mosque; non-Muslims may not be admitted to some. Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours in Ramadan. Respect prayer times, ask before photographing worshippers, and avoid sensitive religious or political topics.
